Living in Barefoot Bay, FL, we all know that our unique residential community has its own charm—and its own set of specific needs when it comes to home maintenance. Recently, the team at Cornelius Electrical Contractors headed out to a local residence to handle a comprehensive service upgrade that’s becoming increasingly common as our homes evolve to handle modern power demands.
The project wasn’t just a simple fix; it was a full-scale modernization of the home’s electrical “handshake” with the utility grid. Here’s a look at how we brought this Barefoot Bay home up to speed.
The Project: Beyond the Breaker Box
When people think of electrical work, they usually think of the panel inside the garage. But for this job, the real work happened where the power meets the property.
- New 150a Meter/Main Combo: We replaced the outdated equipment with a new 150-amp Meter/Main combo. This setup is great for Florida homes because it combines the utility meter and the main service disconnect into one weatherproof outdoor unit. It’s safer for first responders and meets the latest electrical codes.
- The 4×4 Concrete Post: In many parts of Barefoot Bay, service entries require a sturdy, permanent mounting solution. We furnished and installed a new 4×4 concrete post to ensure the new meter remains stable and secure against the Florida elements for decades to come.
- Relocating Underground Service Cables: Sometimes the original placement of a service line just doesn’t make sense for a modern renovation or landscaping. We carefully relocated the existing underground service cable to align with the new equipment location.
- New Underground Conduit & Cable: To finish it off, we ran new underground conduit and cabling from the new meter/main combo all the way to the existing FPL (Florida Power & Light) handhole. This ensures a clean, protected path for power to travel from the street to the home.
Why This Matters for Barefoot Bay Homeowners
Many homes in our area were originally built with lower amperage services that struggle to keep up with today’s high-efficiency AC units, electric vehicle chargers, or modern kitchen appliances.
Upgrading to a 150a or 200a service doesn’t just stop your breakers from tripping; it increases your home’s value and ensures your electrical system isn’t running “hot” under a constant heavy load. Plus, moving everything into a modern conduit protects your lines from the moisture and shifts in our Florida soil.
